Some engine programs for very light jets are in full swing while certification awaits others.

Engine development and certification are proceeding on schedule among makers of engines for very light jets (VLJs), even as some makers of this new aircraft category (under 10,000 lb) struggle to gain altitude. GE Honda Aero Engines, Pratt & Whitney, and Williams International are the major suppliers of engines for VLJ makers.

The personal jet is one of two subsets of VLJs. The other, the VLJ business jet, has garnered more attention because, among other reasons, it could have a significant impact on both the general aviation and commercial aviation sectors. Players in the VLJ business jet arena include a mix of startup companies; large, established companies; and one that can be considered part startup, part established firm.
