Authors Abstract
Content
The research work encompasses design of an automatic braking assist system which includes ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection. The sensors can provide an auditory warning of an approaching obstacle. Once an obstacle is detected the brakes are actuated. This automatic brake assist system is divided into three parts, the obstacle detection system, the brake actuation system and the interfacing system. The obstacle detection system consists of the ultrasonic sensor system which works on the principle of propagating sound waves and calculating the time taken for the return echo to reach the receiver. This gives the distance of the object from the vehicle. The brake actuation system consists of a permanent magnet DC motor. The motor is actuated by a microcontroller which gets its input from the controller of the ultrasonic system. The interface board functions as a controller for the brake actuation system. An experimental set up was made using the above parts which include an ultrasonic system with a range of 1.2 ± 0.5m. The outcome of this experiment shows the feasibility of such a system and that with a D.C motor a maximum brake force of 0.4g is achieved. The maximum speed for which this brake force is achieved is 10kmph.
