SAE100 Future look: The advent of the automotive age has brought us economic growth and social and cultural development.
However, it must be acknowledged that social and environmental issues, such as traffic accidents and atmospheric pollution, have also occurred. To address these automobile-related issues, regulations for the environment and safety were introduced in the latter half of the 20th century. These regulations have progressively been made stricter. But the countermeasures adopted by the various social stakeholders have been fragmented, and mutual dialogue is lacking. In addition, the measures adopted by the mobility industry since these issues became apparent have been mostly reactive.
As we enter the 21st century, we face various crises, such as global warming and fossil fuel depletion, which threaten both mankind and the future of mobility At Toyota, we are focusing on measures to address these global problems as the most important management issue. In addition to reactive measures like those adopted up to now, Toyota has maintained a policy based on proactivity, an active approach in which we attempt to anticipate the future. We have chosen the slogan “Today for Tomorrow” to express the fundamental principle underpinning our R&D activities. It is a policy that aims to independently predict problems, thus allowing us to implement solutions before the problems occur. Through this type of activity, we are promoting a positive dialogue with all stakeholders, including government, the academic world, and NGOs (nongovernmental organizations). Toyota is determined to make every effort possible to solve the automobile-related problems facing humanity and our world. We believe that the solution lies in the realization of sustainable mobility.
