THIN-FILM COATINGS TECHNOLOGY

NIST's Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory continues its research to gain better understanding of the mechanical properties of thin-film aerospace applications.

For over a year, NIST's Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory has been conducting research into the mechanical properties of thin-film materials, concentrating on two main aspects. One is to gain a better understanding of the deformation and fracture mechanics of multilayered materials so methods such as predictive design can be employed. The other is developing better methods for measuring mechanical properties such as ultrasonics.
