While consumer telematics applications are often sold for entertainment, convenience, or even pure novelty, equipment OEMs and their customers must realize a return for investment in telematics, defined here as two-way wireless communication between equipment and its external environment. This return can come in the form of revenue, efficiency, product improvement, or enhanced customer support.

According to Phoenix International, a John Deere company, the first step in determining a business justification for telematics is to determine up front who the stakeholders are for the solution.
