Software must monitor and manage many parameters while coordinating the complex operations of the engine, electric motors, and batteries.

Software continues to make huge contributions to the rapid evolution of the auto industry. That is particularly true in hybrid vehicles, where software must manage the complex interactions between power sources and control battery packs while still maximizing the often contrary demands of fuel efficiency and good driving response.

Though hybrid sales have been slowing a bit, there is no slowdown in automakers' development activity. J.D. Power foresees expansion to as many as 65 hybrid models in the U.S. market by 2010, a far cry from just 11 in 2005. Sales are expected to hit 775,000 units in 2010, more than double the 345,000 hybrids predicted to sell this year.
