Control systems are key components not only for battery packs in electrified powertrains but also have a big role to play in power consumption throughout the vehicle.

Electrified powertrains are touted as an alternative that will save fuel costs, but engineers developing the electric systems face a challenge similar to those of the internal combustion engines they aim to displace. Design teams have to come up with control techniques that let them improve efficiency so owners can run longer between charges.

The control systems for battery packs are a key determinant in the many parameters associated with electrified powertrains, such as range, performance, and reliability. Carmakers and suppliers work closely together to determine the optimal battery features for their applications, setting those parameters at the outset of the project. After that, the focus shifts to the complex issue of the controls that ensure that the batteries provide the ideal mixture for lifetimes and mileage before recharging.
