Tight linkage between engine and transmission increases efficiency.
Electronic controls are extending their reach, managing transmissions to improve performance and fuel economy. This transformation comes as engineers focus on ways to synchronize all functions of a vehicle.
Now that microcontrollers are a central part of engine design, they are becoming tightly synchronized with transmissions and hydraulic systems. This holistic approach to vehicle design lets engineers do far more fine tuning than is possible with mechanical transmissions.
