Authors Abstract
Content
The basic concept of fairness and accessibility in modern technology is not easy to define. The nascent literature on these topics especially with a high level of autonomous vehicles has identified and delineated potential ways for the research communities, and yet has shown these are not compatible in considering the other side of the spectrum: humans and technology. Unstated assumptions about these core concepts may influence how intelligent systems be designed, which may create unwanted biases and inaccessibility for vulnerable populations such as people with disabilities. Therefore, any intelligence (transportation) system is a socio-technical system, and thus it requires an account of the ways humans and technology are imbricated in larger structures of institutional, economic, and political power. Further, we are not short of anecdotal evidence on how much impact employment instead of income supports intrinsically empowers people of disabilities to be not only financially independent, but also socially and psychologically accountable, confident, and thriving in their life.
