The push to conserve fuel and reduce emissions is prompting major changes in system design.
Engineers are using new materials, embedded sensors, higher pressures, and other technologies to make systems that are smaller and lighter.
The range of techniques comes as system designers attempt to add more functionality without impacting sight lines. The changes are driven by tightened environmental requirements in the U.S. and Europe.
