In preparation for stricter EPA requirements for two-cycle engines, Deere & Company's Consumer Products division developed a two-cycle engine technology that could cut emissions by 75% compared to current engines. According to Deere, the technology also can reduce the fuel consumption of small engines by as much as 30%.
The low-emissions performance is achieved by the near elimination of the unburned fuel charge during the exhaust stroke. The new technology preserves the desirable characteristics of the two-cycle engine including simplicity of construction, low manufacturing cost, high power-to-weight ratios, high-speed operation capability, and ease of maintenance. Deere's Homelite brand will introduce the technology in models produced this year.
