SAE 100 Future look: More than 100 years ago, two sons of German immigrants running a wagon-making operation in Brooklyn, NY, were approached by a customer with a problem.

The customer had a company that offered tours of the city's Prospect Park, but the expense of operating his horse-drawn carriages was rising. He had read of the newfangled “horseless carriages” powered by internal-combustion engines, and wondered if the new technology revolutionizing personal transportation could be applied to his business to make it more profitable.

By the time Jack and Augustus Mack were done, they had created a twelve-passenger motorized bus-the first in North America-and in doing so also created the foundation for one of the most enduring brands in American commerce: Mack Trucks, Inc. The melding of entrepreneurial thinking, technical expertise, and dedication to finding ways to help the customer remains the secret to success in the trucking business.
