Lockheed Martin and its suppliers are gearing up activities to launch the first Atlas V launch vehicle before the end of the year.
Lockheed Martin and its suppliers have recently completed major components for the Atlas V launch vehicle, such as the Centaur upper stage. The company also has plans for future upgrades to the system, such as new fault-tolerant inertial navigation units. The Atlas V program was started to meet the needs of the U.S. Air Force for its Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program and the growing needs of International Launch Services for its commercial and government satellite customers worldwide.
The company recently awarded Honeywell Space Systems a $52 million contract to produce fault-tolerant inertial navigation units for the Atlas V. The navigation units are the latest in an established line of high-performance guidance, navigation, and control products for launch vehicles.
