Efficient, eco-friendly hybrid concepts, in “conventional” and plug-in forms, headlined January's North American International Auto Show, but a majority of the debuting concept vehicles boasted large-capacity V8, V10, or V12 engines aimed at ultimate performance.

“Here it is; a truly electrically driven car from General Motors. I am-shocked-truly shocked,” said a tongue-in-cheek Bob Lutz, as the GM Vice Chairman unveiled the Chevrolet Volt concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show.

A stylish midsize sedan, the Volt previews a family of modular “plug-in” electric drive systems called E-flex, which GM aims to begin deploying across its vehicles globally as soon as battery technology is ready. The system will be capable of propelling the vehicle up to 40 mi (64 km) on battery power alone and be recharged using a common 110-volt electrical outlet.
