The ambitious Future Tactical Truck Systems program aims to leverage commercial-sector know-how to make safer, more capable military vehicles.
The U.S. military has embarked on its most important vehicle development and procurement program since World War II, and it is seeking suppliers and automakers with new technologies to join on.
The Future Tactical Truck Systems (FTTS) program aims to replace the fleet of roughly 200,000 U.S. Army and Marine Corps light-, medium-, and heavy-duty tactical trucks beginning early next decade. FTTS vehicles will take over the duties of everything from the ubiquitous Humvee to the monstrous eight-wheel-drive, 16.5-ton (15-t) PLS palletized cargo transport.
