Optrex combines mechanical and digital technologies to meet the greater performance requirements of information displays.

For many years, automobile instrumentation has not received the emphasis that other parts of vehicles have, according to Stefan Lenz, District Manager, Automotive, Optrex America, Inc. In North America especially, speedometer, tachometer, and other gauge information has traditionally been provided on flat surfaces, without realizing the full potential for functionality and styling that is possible and, increasingly, desirable to drivers. The digital car is changing that, and LCD manufacturers are quickly adapting to-and even driving the shift to-new functionality, ergonomics, and styling in automotive interior displays.

Modern vehicle interior designs and styling increasingly incorporate the use of multiple, larger flat-panel displays. These displays may include a combination of information related to the driver, night vision, navigation, and infotainment systems. The location of these displays in the vehicle requires individually adjusted specifications or even specially devised technologies to provide optimum performance and meet the styling requirements and expectations of the automaker and buyer. These displays can provide more information in an easier-to-read format and include style embellishments such as chrome accents, colored dials, illuminated pointers, and gauges with a 3-D look.
