As predicted countless times over the past decade, 2020 has indeed proved to be an inflection point for the automated vehicle (AV) industry. Unfortunately for all companies and investors that have poured tens of billions of dollars into the technologies aimed at eliminating human drivers, that inflection is absolutely nothing like what was hoped for.

The combination of a global pandemic and economic meltdown stacked on top of technological challenges mean that AVs aren't ready for prime time. And when they are ready, they may be used very differently.
