Pi Research brings its motorsports digital data-acquisition technology to the aerospace industry.

Traditionally, engineers in motorsports have looked to aerospace for new techniques and technologies. Aerodynamics is one example, with racecars needing downforce rather than lift. In late 1978, Brabham tried to use surface cooling panels instead of conventional radiators in an attempt to reduce drag. Materials technology is another area where aerospace has entered the motorsports loop. It is now 20 years since McLaren International turned to Hercules Aerospace in the U.S. for expertise when developing the first carbon-fiber monocoque structures to be used in Formula One.

But today that one-sided situation has changed. According to Chris Aylett, Chief Executive of the UK's Motorsports Industry Association, there is now an ebb and flow of materials technologies and manufacturing between the two sectors. “A division of McLaren has reversed that original flow by supplying composites to the Beagle Orbiter spacecraft, and Reynard now has a division manufacturing aircraft seating,” he said. Continuing this trend, Aylett recently led a trade delegation of motorsports engineers to visit aerospace companies and establishments in the U.S.
