A new convertible top and several structural enhancements are added to the 2001 model.

For its convertible top on the 2001 Eclipse Spyder, Mitsubishi has continued use of high-quality three-layer fabric, a separate polyester/cotton interior headliner, twin electric motors, and a heated glass rear window. However, several design updates and manufacturing improvements have been made to both the convertible top and the vehicle's structure. Tops for the Spyder are made by ASC, which is located close to the Spyder production facility.

The outer layer of the top is made from an acrylic material that is solution-dyed before it is spun into threads. This coloring method ensures that the top's color remains consistent over time, even at high-wear points like the frame/bow connections and window seams. Many convertible tops are made from materials that are vat-dyed after being woven. Over time, these materials discolor at the wear points and begin fading to a gray tone.
