Bigger memories, faster cores let engineers boost efficiency and reduce emissions in engines.
Until there is a cost-effective replacement for internal-combustion engines, reducing their fuel consumption and emissions is going to be a hot research area. As engineers find new ways to burn fuel cleanly and efficiently, microprocessor makers are racing to give them more effective controllers.
The advancing capabilities of these micros are sparking significant advances in engine controls. New fuel-injection techniques and better control of valves and crankshafts are driving increased demand for electronics in the powertrain-particularly for engine control.
