Ride and handling can be influenced and controlled by the latest electronics, but careful mechanical design of the suspension can deliver significant benefits.
The ride and handling of smaller, lower cost cars is becoming increasingly important because today's customers expect performance at a level previously only expected from large, more expensive vehicles. At the higher end of the market there is also a demand for better performance without significantly increased cost.
The latest chassis technology for improved safety and handling via the use of sophisticated electronics and software has been getting a lot of attention recently, but underneath all that are the basic mechanical components that are ultimately responsible for the character of the vehicle. Antilock braking systems, traction control, and electronic stability control are all features that deliver significant benefit for the occupants of a vehicle, but mainly under adverse driving conditions. Ride and handling characteristics are experienced by the driver and passengers all the time.
