Sensors help engines boost performance while meeting emissions requirements.
The challenges of meeting new emissions regulations without sacrificing fuel economy or output are prompting major changes in diesel engines. Meeting these opposing demands requires increased precision, which shines the spotlight on the sensors that link engine central processing units to the real world.
Electronic control units (ECUs) get most of the focus, since microcontrollers are the brains that determine when precise fuel mixtures are mixed and ignited in extremely tight time frames. But these controllers are blind without the sensors that monitor ever-changing operating conditions.
