Military programs explore autonomy to lighten operator workloads.
While the explosion of electronic functions has made the operator environment itself far more comfortable than it used to be, some would argue that same explosion has made operators more stressed. That observation has motivated researchers to focus on ways to allow operators to manage the many tools they now have available without losing track of the basic job of the vehicle-to move from one point to another.
The basic challenges facing engineers who design military vehicles is no different than those who develop industrial equipment-customers want to get by with fewer people. Electronic systems are seen as a way to do that.
