- This work is part of a series of studies which intends to systematically address the Vehicle Definition & Occupant Packaging processes. Is presented an overview of the Concept Phase which is the design process of developing a vehicle concept. The Concept Phase is where and when the basic characteristics of the vehicle are defined and it can be broken down into four essential processes: (a) Product Planning & Strategy; (b) Functional Target setting; (c) Package Ideation; and (d) Business Case & Concept Approval. The introduction of this background has the objective of provide the reader the theoretical basis for the main objective of this work, which is to approach the Package Ideation process with the perspective of applying the CAD KBE templates introduced by De Almeida [01]. It is outlined how the subjective outputs of the Product Planning & Strategy and Functional Target setting processes are used as inputs for the CAD KBE templates, as part of Package ideation process. This set of templates is organized in a CAD environment with a shared graphical interface from which the Concept Engineering Team can simultaneously manipulate the essential geometrical features for the Concept Definition. The template outputs are essential data for developing feasibility studies, support the vehicle styling development, and configurate the initial DMU. The templates outputs are also essential for the elaboration of the Business Case that assesses the feasibility of transforming the concept into a product, based on the Customer-Oriented Design perspective and business strategy.
