In anticipation of the increased use of electronics in place of hydraulic systems, TRW Aeronautical Systems is developing new system architectures and technologies for a more electric aircraft.
TRW Aeronautical Systems (formerly Lucas Aerospace) is actively developing and pursuing new technologies and components in support of its “all-electric” strategy and concepts. One of the few remaining pieces to this puzzle is an electronic engine control system. Taking advantage of several government-funded programs, the company has demonstrated the feasibility of its system and is planning an engine demonstration soon. Development of this control system is ongoing as is continued development of other technologies such as high-temperature electronics.
Aircraft have traditionally featured hydraulic and mechanical power systems with mechanical controls. Recent aircraft such as the Airbus A320 have featured fly-by-wire - electronic control of hydraulic and mechanical power systems. The next step is a “more electric” aircraft that features both electrical power with electronic control. Such a system could be seen on future aircraft such as the Airbus A3XX.
