As electrohydraulics technologies mature and expand, the cost of incorporating them into equipment continues to decrease.
For large vehicles such as mining trucks, electrohydraulics is a small fraction of cost. Even for much lower-priced equipment, such as motor graders and hydraulic excavators, the cost of including electrohydraulics is negligible. But for smaller equipment, including most backhoe loaders and skid steers, price is a big issue.
Joe Burgart is an electrical engineer at John Deere Commercial & Consumer Equipment Division and worked on the development of the company's new 110 TLB (tractor loader backhoe). Robert Cork is a mechanical engineer who worked on the 110 TLB's hydraulics. They both gained valuable experience on the economics of the inclusion of electrohydraulics.
