Truck makers and engine technology manufacturers continue to refine hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines (H2-ICE), viewing the strategy as a promising pathway toward lower-carbon heavy-duty transportation. With hydrogen trucks expected to begin appearing on roads as soon as next year, the technology is progressing from demonstration projects toward market readiness.
Volvo Group, for example, is working with Cespira, a joint venture with Westport Fuel Systems, to apply its HPDI fuel system technology to Volvo's 13-L engine platform to enable it to run on hydrogen. The companies signed a development agreement over the summer to finalize the integration and commercialization of Cespira's system.
