The vexing technical issues of integrating conventional and electric propulsion systems are complicated by the push to trim costs.
While many observers expect a slow takeoff for hybrid vehicles that combine internal combustion engines with electric propulsion, there is a major global effort to improve performance and drive down costs. Much of this effort is occurring in the electronics industry, which plays a key role in managing the complex issues involved with having two engines, a large battery pack, and a complex power-distribution scheme.
Tier 1 suppliers and vendors throughout the electronics industry are striving to meet the standards set by traditional vehicles for hybrids. Neither customers nor automakers will accept less from a hybrid, so all the standard concerns about vehicle electronics can not be ignored. But ironing out the many issues involved with the development of a new class of vehicle is keeping electronics engineers extremely busy.
