The drive to reduce hybrid vehicle cost while boosting efficiency has brought new attention to stop-start and mild-hybrid systems.
When industry discussions turn to hybrid-electric vehicles, you can bet the term “plug-in” isn't far behind. Indeed, this year's annual SAE International Hybrid Vehicle Symposium was dominated by presentations on plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) technology and related issues. But while the talk has turned to plug-ins and even E-REVs (extended-range electrics such as GM's upcoming Volt), the realities of cost and time to market loom large as ever.
Product planners and engineers charged with reducing near-term fuel consumption are opting for solutions that deliver maximum bang for the buck. And few offer the value, package efficiency, and adaptability of stop-start and mild-hybrid systems.
