ANNUAL COMPETITION PROVIDES A HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE ENGINEERING STUDENTS.

DEVELOPING A FAST AND FUEL-EFFICIENT PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC RACECAR was the demanding challenge tackled by teams of collegiate engineering students at the 4th annual Formula Hybrid International Competition, an event founded and organized by Dartmouth College's Thayer School of Engineering and included in SAE International's Collegiate Design Series of competitions.

While several racecars were zooming around a 1.058-mi (1.703-km) oval track's third and fourth turns for the 13.67-mi (22.00-km) endurance portion of the challenge, the University of Manitoba's car was stuck in an infield garage. The system that managed the detachable air-cooled lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery units was kaput, and resolving the issue was a time-consuming fix.
