Embraer applied lean manufacturing concepts during the planning and construction of a new composites assembly line for its Legacy 500.
In 2008, Embraer, the world's largest manufacturer of commercial jets of up to 120 seats, and one of Brazil's leading exporters, announced the development of two new plants in Portugal, both based in the city of Évora, south of Lisbon. The facilities were to be dedicated to the manufacture of machined metal structures and composite material assemblies.
Deciding to locate these centers of excellence in Évora was the result of a careful assessment that included several factors, such as potential access to skilled labor, logistical infrastructure, and the presence of the Aeronautical Industry Park near the municipal airport. The plants are expected to start operating this year.
