Powering aircraft from Mach 2 fighters to tiny hovering UAVs, military engine technology is now operating on a very broad front. Design and production flexibility together with reduced in-service costs are priorities.
Companies that make military propulsion systems face a panoply of product technology demand the like of which has not been seen before outside the narrow confines of research. From very powerful turbofans with vectored thrust capability for strike fighters, through turboprops for hauling large transports, down to small jets for UAV and UCAV (unmanned combat aerial vehicle) platforms, the spread of expertise required is immense. But the emphasis may shift.
