Automakers could make greater headway in their quest to meet fuel-economy standards if consumers would be willing to give up some of the comfort and convenience features to which they have become accustomed.
But there are not a lot of consumers ready to forego an audio system, power windows, and air-conditioning in return for the personal benefit of lower fuel expenses, let alone for the communal benefits of energy independence and environmental protection.
