- Recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic downturn, has shown us how international supply chains are fragile. We have also seen that Additive Manufacturing (commonly known as 3D printing) is the one advanced manufacturing technology that has allowed gaps in supply chain to be filled rapidly, if temporarily, especially in the fight against COVID. Changes in manufacturing strategies to go from one key industry sector to another, are not usually undertaken lightly. However, Additive Manufacturing might in fact be the precise tool that will allow businesses to rapidly pivot from aerospace to medical, given some similarities in material, processing and stringent qualification processes. This presentation will outline some of the issues involved in such a pivot and some thoughts on what might lead to successful transitions.
