Universitat Stuttgart of Germany and Auburn University of the U.S. take crowns at Formula SAE competitions.

IT'S NOT UNUSUAL that certain teams from Europe and the U.S. are routinely found among the top-performing ones year in, year out at the Formula SAE Michigan competition, part of the SAE International Collegiate Design Series. And so it was again in 2016, with Universitat Stuttgart, Graz Technical University, and the FH Joanneum University Graz placing first, second, and third overall, respectively.

They get most of the well-deserved attention. But also deserving of mention are the teams that improve year after year or that do well almost every year but haven't quite managed to grab the biggest prize-at least not in recent years. Among such teams is the University of Michigan-Dearborn, which for the second year in a row finished eighth overall at Formula SAE Michigan. It finished 27th in 2014 and 83rd in 2013.
