Abstract

The impact of ethanol fuels on regulated tailpipe emissions is studied and assessed by two Chrysler researchers in a 2012 SAE technical paper.

As debate in the U.S. rages over raising ethanol content in pump gasoline, researchers are investigating the impact of the higher ethanol blends on vehicle emissions. One study by Chrysler focused on its effect on regulated tailpipe emissions including carbonyls, addressing different ethanol content and different ambient temperatures.

In addition to THC, CO, NOx, CH4, and CO2 tailpipe emissions, the analysis included carbonyl measurement with formaldehydes, acetaldehydes, and the other 11 carbonyl species.
