This roundup of recent engineering developments highlights that cutting emissions does not have to mean cutting the fun.
CO2 emissions targets continue to spiral downwards. The EU proposal for 2012 for new cars is 130 g/km-a 10-g/km cut from the current level-with a subsequent further 10-g/ km reduction expected to be achieved via secondary technologies such as low-rolling- resistance tires. In the face of these demands, a challenge for OEMs is to create cars that will successfully meet ever-tougher environmental criteria without becoming dull and boring to drive.
Integrating environmental responsibility, brisk performance, no serious cost penalties, greater overall efficiency, reduced weight, improved engine durability, and those high levels of driveability is not an easy undertaking.
