Developed in record time, the 2.0- and 2.4-L debut in the 2013 Dodge Dart. The 2.4-L features the first global application of MultiAir II technology.
In more than 30 years as a Chrysler Powertrain engineer, Bob Lee has stared down the barrel of extreme program timing on many occasions. But nothing in the past compared with the pressure of the 2013 Dodge Dart program, which called for Lee's team to deliver two essentially all-new four-cylinder engines-2.0 L and 2.4 L-within 22 months.
“The 2.0-L program was approved in May 2010,” Lee, who is Vice President of Powertrain Engineering, told AEI. “Start of production is March 2012. In the first meeting related to this program, [Chief Engineer] Glenn McFarland and I were sitting with each other. When we heard the timing, Glenn and I looked at each other and said, ‘No way.’ But we knew failure to deliver was not an option.”
