The Z06 is the big news for 2001, the new model having a high-output 5.7-L LS6 V8 developed by GM Powertrain.
Chevrolet has given the Corvette higher performance and greater refinement for 2001. “Corvette for 2001 offers more in several dimensions: more performance, more agility, and more refinements,” said Dave Hill, Corvette Chief Engineer. The coupe and convertible models get a significant performance boost, especially at lower speeds where it is more noticeable. A second-generation Active Handling system is now standard on all Corvettes. In the area of refinement, there are improvements in noise isolation, idle quality, maintenance costs, and fuel economy.
But the biggest news is the introduction of the Z06. Based on last year's hardtop model, which was the lightest, stiffest, and quickest Corvette, the Z06 is intended for enthusiasts at the upper end of the high-performance market. Chevrolet says that it is the quickest, best-handling production Corvette ever. The Z06 designation honors Zora Arkus-Duntov, Corvette's first Chief Engineer, who in 1963 created the original Z06 package for the race-ready version of the Sting Ray.
