The company's latest entry in the premium compact segment comes to market with rear-wheel drive, 50:50 weight distribution and longitudinally mounted engines headlined by a powerful turbodiesel
BMW'S production car range includes, or has included, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8 Series models. Logically, the Mini might have been expected to be the 1 Series, but BMW chose to give that small-car range a separate entity-indeed, its own brand. Instead, the 1 Series designation was held back for the all-new premium compact now in production. Initially manufactured as a five-door hatchback, the range will eventually be broadened to include versions targeted at many international markets including the U.S. Its coupe-like roofline lends itself to a three-door version, and other configurations, including a cabriolet, are projected.
As would be expected of a BMW, the car has rear-wheel drive, with the engine (choice of gasoline or diesel) placed longitudinally. Like most of its siblings, it has individualistic styling, with just a hint of Z4 roadster about it, a long hood, and a set-back cabin.
