The industry's suppliers are developing equipment and methods that are helping OEMs design better powertrains and chassis.
To ensure optimal performance from a racecar on the track, engineers must thoroughly test every element of the design-including suspension dynamics, steering behavior, and aerodynamic loading-ideally under laboratory conditions.
Instron Structural Testing recently designed a multi-axis test fixture to apply dynamic loads to a racecar. The fixture can be used in the lab to test the vehicle's response to different steering, braking, and accelerating scenarios, providing data that would be difficult to acquire on a test track. The mechanical design team based in Germany worked closely with the control system specialists in the UK.
