Cummins hopes its long-term emissions strategy provides a sustainable competitive advantage in the industry.
Many mining OEMs and suppliers agree that there has been an unprecedented upturn in demand for mining equipment over the past several years, with many currently working at full capacity just to meet demands. The previous global slump in-and then sudden recovery of-equipment sales has delayed both scheduled upgrades to existing equipment and new product introductions. Indeed, at MINExpo last September some prominent equipment suppliers' new-product display areas were smaller than expected.
In contrast, engine manufacturers have barely had time to breathe, as emissions-compliant engines must always be readily available regardless of anticipated demand. From an equipment buyer and operator perspective, especially those in areas of the world where large mining operations are associated with increased air pollution, a prerequisite for new product purchase agreements stipulates that equipment is delivered on time and powered by clean engines that are easily installed.
