Detroit is attracting more and more automotive technical centers as its manufacturing base declines.
The greater Detroit area suffered mightily during the 1980s, but it has been undergoing a slow transformation over the past several years. The area has become a potent force in the research and development area, with strength in advanced manufacturing.
This renaissance has occurred as more and more companies set up shop to be close to the major operations, creating a snowball effect that attracts more companies. Much of the growth has come as foreign manufacturers establish operations here. This offshore influx is being encouraged by all parties.
