In recent years, from the viewpoint of climate change prevention and environmental protection, fuel efficiency and exhaust gas regulations in each country have become increasingly stringent year by year. The share of electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle are expanding, especially in developed countries. However, the sales ratio of gasoline vehicle is still high in the global automobile market. Therefore, it is very important to improve the environmental performance of gasoline engines from the viewpoint of environmental protection on a global scale. Then, Honda has developed a new engine for gasoline vehicles with enhanced fuel economy and emissions performance. The newly developed gasoline engine makes maximum use of the structure and components of a gasoline engine for hybrid vehicles with excellent environmental performance that was developed in advance. As a result, in a short development period, the newly developed gasoline engine realized high environmental performance with low cost. In general, engines for hybrid vehicles focus on fuel efficiency, but engines for gasoline vehicles, in addition to environmental performance, output power and torque characteristics are also important factors. In order to achieve a high level of balance between environmental performance and power performance, the compression ratio has been increased compared to previous gasoline engine. To address the issue of knocking caused by high compression ratio, the newly developed engine featured technologies such as 35MPa gasoline direct injection, optimized spray pattern, high volume external EGR, and intake ports and combustion chamber shapes that enable rapid combustion. The newly developed engine has achieved a 1 mpg improvement in fuel economy compared to previous engine, and the SULEV30 standard with small amounts of precious metals.
