In February 1977 the Applied Technology Laboratory, US Army Research and Technology Laboratories, (AVRADCOM), initiated a program for the design, fabrication, and test of an 800 SHP Advanced Technology Demonstrator Engine (ATDE). The purpose of the ATDE program is to provide a validated engine technology base from which a future engineering development could evolve at a minimum of risk and cost. The ATDE designs incorporate advanced technology components and features developed in recent years through both Government- and company-sponsored research and development. The ATDE programs are of 4 years duration and consist of design, fabrication, and test of all major engine components and accessories plus the accumulation of approximately 500 hours of combined gas generator and engine testing. During the entire course of the program, emphasis is to be placed on reliability, maintainability, survivability, and cost characteristics as well as on a high level of performance. This paper describes the engine design features and the major goals of the ATDE program.
