Critical Analysis of Prototype Autonomous Vehicle Crash Rates: Six Scientific Studies from 2015-2018. Are automated vehicles a net safety benefit or harm compared to human-driven conventional vehicles? Prior answers to this question were based on "hopes" or modeling studies with no real-world AV crash data. However, six scientific studies were conducted from 2015-18 based on observed real-world AV crash data. This book critically reviews the data and methods in each of the six studies. Next, the author identifies and then corrects the identified errors, biases, and best practice violations in each study to the extent possible. Finally, the studies are reanalyzed with the updated data using epidemiologic methods. The main objective is to help future studies avoid these common errors and biases in their real-world AV safety data analyses.
