The scope of this document is to provide uniform guidelines for the application of starter motor pinions and ring gears. SAE J543 contains guidelines for the use of diametral pitch gearing. The pinion data shown are based on the Fellows stub tooth system. Refer to ISO 8123, ISO 9457-1, and ISO 9457-2 for module gearing, and corresponding metric dimensions.
The Electrical Systems Group is responsible for the maintenance project monitoring and forward planning of all standards projects and the timetables established for those projects by the Technical Committees in the areas of: Power Distribution, Power Systems, Powertrain/Chassis Electronics, Electrical/Electronic Reliability,Multiplexing and Diagnostics,Lighting and Signalling, Intra/Extravehicular Electromagnetic Compatibility as related principally to passenger cars or light trucks and defined by the Motor Vehicle Council.The Group is responsible for organizing or abolishing Technical Committees as needed to undertake and complete the preparation of SAE technical reports in their interest area. This responsibility includes coordination with other Systems Groups to eliminate areas of conflict and duplication and yet ensure that evolving needs are anticipated and met.The Group shall conduct an annual review of its Technical Committees to ensure that new technologies are being addressed within the existing Technical Committees. If no such committee exists, a new committee will be organized. The Group Director shall provide a status report to the Motor Vehicle Council.

Wild Cards
Using the asterisk, ( * ) allows you to search for a partial word. For example, entering a keyword search of aero* will search for any word beginning with aero.
Using the question mark, ( ? ) allows you to search for a word with a single character wildcard. For example, searching for t?re would match both tire and tyre
Using Quotes
Words in double quotes " " are treated as a phrase. Conducting a search for "heat model" will return all results in which the exact phrase "heat model" is found, while "heat modeling" would NOT be included.
A term combined with a phrase will be joined with an OR operator.
Searching for Standards
When searching for a standard please use the entire Document Number assigned, which includes the abbreviation. A space can be used, or omitted between the abbreviation and number.
