This SAE Information Report provides a uniform means of designating wrought steels during a period of usage prior to the time they meet the requirements for SAE standard steel designation. The numbers consist of the prefix PS1 followed by a sequential number starting with 1. A number once assigned is never assigned to any other composition.
A PS number may be obtained for steel composition by submitting a written request to SAE Staff, indicating the chemical composition and other pertinent characteristics of the material. If the request is approved according to established procedures, SAE Staff will assign a PS number to the grade. This number will remain in effect until the grade meets the requirements for an SAE standard steel or the grade is discontinued according to established procedures.
Table 1 is a listing of the chemical composition limits of potential standard steels which were considered active on the date of the last survey prior to the date of this report. These ladle limits are subject to standard variations for check analysis as given in SAE J409.
Rationale
The technology in this specification is stable and no further technical revisions are applicable at this time.
The Metals Technical Committee (MTC) controls specifications for Ferrous and Non-Ferrous: Metallic Wrought Products, Cast & Sintered Products, Metal Properties & Processes, and Metal Test Procedures. The MTC oversees standards to establish uniform procedures that: 1) establish a common language for the industry to review materials and processes through standards, 2) are reviewed and updated on a regular 5-year basis with coordination to other industry specifications, and 3) creates a common industry interface for technical discussions. The MTC ensures that all standards are developed with qualified personnel to perform respective tasks, meets at least once a year to provide relevant updates to current specifications, and assesses whether new standards are needed by industry. The committee also maintains the public web pages by reviewing and updating the information necessary. The MTC shall report to the Materials Processes and Parts Council (MPPC) on a biannual basis. Participants in the SAE Metals Technical Committee include representatives from OEMs, suppliers, consulting firms, government, and other interested parties.

Wild Cards
Using the asterisk, ( * ) allows you to search for a partial word. For example, entering a keyword search of aero* will search for any word beginning with aero.
Using the question mark, ( ? ) allows you to search for a word with a single character wildcard. For example, searching for t?re would match both tire and tyre
Using Quotes
Words in double quotes " " are treated as a phrase. Conducting a search for "heat model" will return all results in which the exact phrase "heat model" is found, while "heat modeling" would NOT be included.
A term combined with a phrase will be joined with an OR operator.

When searching for a standard please use the entire Document Number assigned, which includes the abbreviation. A space can be used, or omitted between the abbreviation and number.
