This specification covers an aircraft-quality, low-alloy steel in the form of bars, forgings, flash-welded rings, and stock for forging or flash-welded rings.
Rationale
AMS6322S is the result of a Five-Year Review and update of the specification. The revision includes update of the Title to match the Scope and product quality, update to composition (see 3.1) and addition to composition reporting (see 3.1.2), clarification of macrostructure for hollow forgings (see 3.3.1.1 and 8.9), revision of hardenability requirements (see 3.3.3), revision of decarburization testing requirements (see 3.3.4.4), incorporation of requirements for periodic testing per AMS2301 (see 4.2.1 and 4.4.5), additional ordering information on forging stock (see 4.4.3 and 8.9), notes on bar stock quality (see 8.7), and updates to the requirements for product exceptions (see 8.8).
The committee of Carbon and Low Alloy Steels, AMS Committee E, shall prepare, coordinate, and revise documents related to carbon and low alloy steels technology, such as steel cleanliness and steel quality assurance sampling, through the participation of metals suppliers, users, and interested government agencies. Committee activities shall provide a forum for the cooperative interchange of ideas and experience of the participants, resulting in the publication of specifications that embody sound, established aerospace industry practices and requirements to serve the suppliers and customers of aerospace materials.
