Strategies for Side Impact Protection
- Special Publication
- ISBN 1-56091-359-2
Published March 01, 1993 by SAE International in United States
- 80 pages
Unlike in frontal collisions, means of protecting occupants in side impacts has introduced new challenges to automotive design engineers as to what vehicle design parameters should be controlled and how they affect the safety of the occupant. In this publication two different techniques are proposed that would help gain insight on how to optimize the crash behavior of the car door and the side structure for the protection of vehicle occupants over the entire range of impact conditions. The papers presented in this special publication are: strategies for passenger car designs to improve occupant protection in real world side crashes; and evaluation methodologies for automobile side impact development. The two papers have been reviewed by a selected panel of experts in automotive crash safety. Their assessments of the value and benefits of using the proposed methodologies are presented in subsequent discussions by industry experts.
